2011’S TOP PHOTO COMPETITION has begun! Brought to you by Britain’s biggest photography mags, Digital Photo and Practical Photography, Photographer of the Year 2011 gives you the chance to put your talents to the test with six creatively challenging rounds.

We really want you to get involved and see how something as straightforward as entering a photo competition can focus your mind and improve your skills. It’s a great way to grow as a photographer and that’s why we’ve fought to keep it absolutely free to enter!

A panel of five experts will judge all entries and if your efforts impress, you’re in for a reward – your picture will be showcased in the magazines and there are amazing prizes to be claimed each round, thanks to our friends at Jessops and Nikon.

How POTY 2011 works

There are six themes to get your creative juices flowing, and once each round has closed we’ll pick a winner along with 10 shortlisted photographers. You can enter up to two photos per round –so to get started, just click on the Upload button below.

You’ll need to be a member of the Photo Answers community to enter, so If you haven’t already signed up to photoanswers.co.uk just follow the simple on-screen instructions to create an account. This will only take a few seconds and, just like the competition, is completely free.

Our contest kicks off with a round called ‘Stunning Scenics’! That’s right, we want to see your best landscape pictures, so either head for the great outdoors, or take a look through your back catalogue and seek out some inspiring scenery. From gritty urban scenes to idyllic countryside sunsets, misty details captured by long lenses to sweeping panoramas, there are no restrictions on the type of landscape picture you enter. We don’t care how much Photoshop work goes into your effort either, but one thing is really important – the picture or pictures you enter must be entirely your own work and created by you. Winners of Round One will be announced in the July issue!

Here’s how to impress the judges of POTY 2011…

Impact: Your pictures have got to stand out from the crowd if they’re going to pass muster, so make sure yours pack a punch. Whether it’s bold colours, a striking composition, or great light, if your image shouts loud enough we’ll notice it.

Technical merit: Once you’ve caught the judges’ attention we’ll be assessing your photographic skills. Don’t be let down by messing up the basics – no badly framed or focused pictures please!

Originality: Two hurdles down and you’re nearly on the podium but what’s going to push your pic over the line? Originality! Head for unusual locations, unusual angles and digital effects.

If your image covers all bases you’re  in with a great chance of attracting the judges’ attention, winning some great prizes from Nikon and Jessops, and you’ll be in the running for the 2011 Photographer of the Year title.

Here is my second selection:

eerie final

In January 2011 all England was covered in snow and halted to a stop! My husband and I decided to drive from Dewsbury, Kirlklees to Hebden Bridge for a coffee. We got lost and ended up on the “scenic route”.

At the moment between day and night we felt do eerie as you could not distinguish the hills from the sky…
