Flower power nana

Flower power nana. She is a market researcher, knocking from door to door with her touch screen questionaire. Quite a SF novel character if you give her the right context. I would see her chatting with Dazeley‘s Prince Albert

2011’S TOP PHOTO COMPETITION has begun! Brought to you by Britain’s biggest photography mags, Digital Photo and Practical Photography, Photographer of the Year 2011 gives you the chance to put your talents to the test with six creatively challenging rounds.

We really want you to get involved and see how something as straightforward as entering a photo competition can focus your mind and improve your skills. It’s a great way to grow as a photographer and that’s why we’ve fought to keep it absolutely free to enter!

A panel of five experts will judge all entries and if your efforts impress, you’re in for a reward – your picture will be showcased in the magazines and there are amazing prizes to be claimed each round, thanks to our friends at Jessops and Nikon.

How POTY 2011 works

There are six themes to get your creative juices flowing, and once each round has closed we’ll pick a winner along with 10 shortlisted photographers. You can enter up to two photos per round –so to get started, just click on the Upload button below.

You’ll need to be a member of the Photo Answers community to enter, so If you haven’t already signed up to photoanswers.co.uk just follow the simple on-screen instructions to create an account. This will only take a few seconds and, just like the competition, is completely free.

Our contest kicks off with a round called ‘Stunning Scenics’! That’s right, we want to see your best landscape pictures, so either head for the great outdoors, or take a look through your back catalogue and seek out some inspiring scenery. From gritty urban scenes to idyllic countryside sunsets, misty details captured by long lenses to sweeping panoramas, there are no restrictions on the type of landscape picture you enter. We don’t care how much Photoshop work goes into your effort either, but one thing is really important – the picture or pictures you enter must be entirely your own work and created by you. Winners of Round One will be announced in the July issue!

Here’s how to impress the judges of POTY 2011…

Impact: Your pictures have got to stand out from the crowd if they’re going to pass muster, so make sure yours pack a punch. Whether it’s bold colours, a striking composition, or great light, if your image shouts loud enough we’ll notice it.

Technical merit: Once you’ve caught the judges’ attention we’ll be assessing your photographic skills. Don’t be let down by messing up the basics – no badly framed or focused pictures please!

Originality: Two hurdles down and you’re nearly on the podium but what’s going to push your pic over the line? Originality! Head for unusual locations, unusual angles and digital effects.

If your image covers all bases you’re  in with a great chance of attracting the judges’ attention, winning some great prizes from Nikon and Jessops, and you’ll be in the running for the 2011 Photographer of the Year title.

‘People and Places’ is the latest exhibition to go on show at Dewsbury Library’s Art Wall. The display of contemporary artwork will feature pieces by three local artists – Anthony Cree, Andrew Warburton and Christina Hooley, and is the final exhibition in a year-long ‘Art Wall’ programme developed in collaboration with artists from North Kirklees, supported by Arts & Regeneration organisation Loca.

Andrew Warburton

Andrew Warburton has been designing and making unique and exclusive hand-tufted rugs and carpets since graduating in 1988 with a first class Honours degree in carpet design. Based in a studio workshop in Mirfield, Andrew has established his company Area Rugs and Carpets as one of the leading hand tufting companies in the UK. The company has achieved a growing reputation amongst interior designers and architects for high quality design and manufacture of luxury, custom-made hand tufted rugs and carpets. http://www.arearugs.co.uk

Andrew will be presenting three large scale handmade rugs as the centre-point of the exhibition, selected specifically with the theme of ‘People and Places’ in mind.

Working in collaboration with a local digital artist Michael Barrett aka emelbi.com, his Oi! Rug was created using one of Emelbi’s sketches as visual reference. It’s an image of a friend of his – or is it someone that you know? Either way, if you visit the exhibition this bold piece will be watching you!

Andrew’s ‘Grid Reference’ rug was inspired by a weekend trip to Norfolk and completed by re-tracing his steps when he returned home through Google maps. Andrew says of this piece: “The pattern of the fields jumped out to me as a natural rug design.” A third rug – ‘Plough’ – took its inspiration from the fields around Holmfirth, resulting in a natural interpretation of the feeling and textural quality of the surrounding landscape.

Christina Hooley
Christina says of her work: “I am a photographer, learning how to dissect beauty. I cut my images using the camera’s eye; with its sharp diaphragm blades I draw forth slices of reality.”
Her business, Secret World Photography, is a studio which was born from her passion for the hidden realities behind everyday life. Be it family life, business life or just leisure – we’ll bring out that touch of magic that is part of everyone. After a 20 year career in multimedia, advertising and marketing and completing a Bachelor of Arts degree (with Honours) in Graphic Communication she took the leap of faith into self employment as a photographer.
Christina is based in Dewsbury and with mobile equipment is able to cater for individual needs across the whole of Yorkshire, producing exceptional, fresh results from shot to print. She prides herself on creating affordable photographs that truly capture the moment, whilst establishing an enjoyable relationship with the clients.
Christina has a unique take on the exhibition theme, People and Places: “People live and leave their life imprint on places. But neither is eternal and neither is just what meets the eye. There are stories, dreams, fantasies, secret worlds woven between people and places, and this fabric flows in the winds of time… Secret world photography captures for a while, like a butterfly in your palm, tender patterns on the fabric of time.”

Anthony Cree

Anthony is an emerging local photographic student, working under the tutelage of John Todd at Dewsbury’s Wheelwright Centre. He will be presenting a set of photographs of local musicians, shot in their unique creative environments, using only the available natural light.

Recently he has had his work displayed on the Dewsbury Art Wall (in the ‘Small and Beautiful’ exhibition), at the Bradford Pop-Up Space and in cafes & bistros in neighbouring towns.

He has been commissioned by local bands to produce images for CD covers and live and promotional shots, and has created unique personal calendars for friends and family.

Open event and programme details

There will be a special exhibition open event on Thursday 2nd June, 6.30 to 8.00pm, which all are welcome to attend. Artists will be present to talk with visitors about their work, and refreshments will be provided. The exhibition continues until 16th July, and can be viewed during library opening hours.

Exhibitions organised for the next year of the Art Wall (through to June 2012) include a showcase of work by artists at Dewsbury’s Howland Centre, Dewsbury Photographic Society’s annual exhibition, and a print exhibition by members of Mirfield’s West Yorkshire Print Workshop.
